Retriever is a type of dog historically developed as gun dog which retrieves game for hunter. There are three types of gun dogs namely retrievers, flushing spaniels, and pointing breeds. Retrievers are bred by the hunters to catch the birds or prey without damaging the prey. Retrievers are often bred for the soft skills and willingness to work for the hunter when compared to flushing spaniels and pointing breeds. Retrievers have many special characters like obeying the owners, quick learning and soft mouth. Retrievers are distinguished by their non-slip retrieval which acts as a primary function and is soft mouth parts separates form the “hard mouth” gun dogs such as flushing spaniels, and pointing breeds .hard mouth is found to be the main disadvantage of these gun dogs.

Retrievers are properly and carefully trained mainly by the hunters to the retrieve the birds. Retrievers are mainly classified into two types they are golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers which is a popular assistance dog. Retrievers are quite intelligent and energetic .Golden retrievers play a major role in finding illegal drugs. Labrador Retrievers are exceptionally brilliant, gentle, sharp, energetic and good companion and these are known for its detection and working skills all over the world. Well-trained Labrador retrievers are fun loving, obedient and dependable and used by police for detection so, these dogs are very famous in United States and Australia.
